When and where did the Naga belief come from haven’t been 100% proved yet until these days but the root of this belief might have started since very long time back.

 

History has shown that "snake" had been well respected, and been part of ancient beliefs, rituals, and folklores throughout the world. Back then, a large scale of population still believed in superstition, meanwhile snake was often seen as mysterious creature and some groups of people also believed that it brought agriculturally abundance. As a result, snake had been held in high regard and been part of ancient rituals since.

 

In prehistoric Thailand, having snake as part of rituals also had been practiced in this region. Ban Chiang which was a prehistoric agricultural settlement, is considered the most important prehistoric settlement in South east Asia which is now located close to Mekong river, in Udon Thani province, in Thailand. People in Ban Chiang relied very much on Mekong river for living. However, duo to unstable raining, people might have often faced natural disasters which were either flood or drought. Back then people still much believed in holy spirit and superstition. So when they faced indescribable disasters, the solution might have been performing a ritual related to Mekong river which greatly supported their living. And in these rituals, snake had been paid high respect and been part of the rituals as we discovered snake painting on the vessels in Ban Chiang settlement.
